Local
learners benefit from hospital experience

Local learners spend a week at the hospital.
|
A group of local students spent a week at Ethekwini
Hospital & Heart Centre, learning about the different
career opportunities available in healthcare.
Students spent time in various departments and gained
insight into the management of a busy hospital. Hospital
Manager, Niresh Bechan commented that, “It takes a large
team of people to run a hospital. We have staff who
manage ward and theatre bookings, prepare food, look
after equipment, clean wards and provide clean linen,
purchase stock and equipment, manage the finances –
there is a long list of ‘behind the scenes’ players.
Then of course, there are the people we traditionally
associate with a hospital; the nurses and doctors who
provide the care.” Niresh hopes that by spending time at
the hospital, the students will get excited about
careers in healthcare.

“It’s much easier to apply yourself when you have a
specific goal in mind. If, as a result of this visit, a
learner decides that they would like to become a nurse
or a radiographer, they can focus on achieving good
grades to pursue their chosen career.”
HR manager, Bhavani Jeena, welcomed the opportunity to
spend time with the health professionals of the future.
“Attracting young people to our industry is a good
investment for us and for the whole country. We need to
continually develop skills and talent in healthcare to
ensure that the standards we have set will be maintained
and improved upon.” |
