Ophthalmology
EHHC's Ophthalmology department provides a full range of
ophthalmic services. Conditions which affect sight cause
significant loss of quality of life for patients, yet many of
these conditions can be effectively treated to save and improve
vision.
A team of four ophthalmologists, each of whom has a particular
subspecialty, provides the latest methods of surgical and
non-surgical medical treatment of diseases of the eye, including
glaucoma, strabismus, ocular tumours, diabetic retinopathy,
macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and cataracts.

Specialised areas include vitreo-retinal surgery, eyelid surgery
(for surgical and cosmetic applications) and paediatric
ophthalmology.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract extraction is the most common eye surgery performed and
has some of the highest success rates. Every year during World
Sight Week (October) free cataract surgery is performed on
selected indigent patients who cannot afford the procedure.
EHHC provides the hospital facility and theatre staff while the
ophthalmologists and anaesthetists give their time and expertise
free of charge.
